THROWBACK WITH HUSH PUPPIES

A while back I was invited by legacy brand Hush Puppies to customise a pair of their desert boots for an exhibition, it actually  took me a long while to come up with this and I ended up doing dog paw prints over the shoe.  I’m not sure if it ever went into production as I was never told but  I have seen similar out band about .... damn I should have copy written it!

Amy Pliszka: Bees Beside Us

Amy Pliszka: Bees Beside Us

Bees Beside Us,
agnès b.
35-36 Floral Street,
London WC2E 9DJ (Nearest Tube: Covent Garden)

Exhibition from: 3 May – 1 June 2013
Private View: Thursday 2 May 2013, 6.00 – 8.30pm

Bees Beside Us introduces a new type of beehive: an urban living space designed from the perspective of the honeybee. This exhibition showcases Pliszka’s practice informed by her study of honeybees and wild-bee nest architecture merging the fields of art, science and nature.

Brought together for the first time, Pliszka’s innovative and meticulously crafted beehives can be seen in a unique fashion environment. Commissioned by the French designer and gallerist agnès b. for her flagship London store, these new works promote an increasing awareness of the fragility of bees, their importance to civilization and what must be done to ensure their wellbeing in the city, respecting Albert Einstein’s ethos - “No more bees, no more Man.’’

agnès b. and Pliszka share a common interest in environmental concerns, a love of natural materials and attention to the future of how and where things are made. Pliszka’s beehives combine natural hand-turned, British Walnut wooden domes and bespoke pleated textiles to create the sensitive and expandable space that honeybees’ require. The textiles are made of natural fibres such as silk organza and leather adorned with hand-stitched patterns that respond to honeybees’ vision of complex pattern recognition. These elements can be layered depending on the season to maintain the hive at a constant temperature, reflecting the rituals of dressing for the weather. Exhibited alongside the hives are complimentary bespoke accessories including an insect forage garden and a selection of Pliszka’s hand-made pots for plants and a ceramic birdbath displayed on the roof terrace.

Pliszka became fascinated by the plight of the honeybee - whose worldwide population has decreased by 30 % in the last twenty years - during her studies at Central Saint Martins where her final year project focused on the creation of a new type of hive for the increasing number of bees populating Britain’s cities. Bees Beside Us forges a new relationship with bees in the urban context and appreciates all they do for us far beyond the provision of honey.

GIORGIO ARMANI CELEBRATES THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF TOKYO’S ARMANI/GINZATOWER WITH "ECCENTRICO"

GIORGIO ARMANI CELEBRATES THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF TOKYO’S ARMANI/GINZA TOWER WITH "ECCENTRICO" - AN EXHIBITION OF CLOTHES, ACCESSORIES AND JEWELLERY FROM HIS COLLECTIONS

The Armani Group is pleased to announce that an event to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the opening of Armani/Ginza Tower was held yestarday in Tokyo.

On this occasion, the Eccentrico exhibition launched in Milan in September during women’s fashion week was brought to Japan. It will be open to the public from November 30th to December 13th and will be held on the ninth floor of the building.

The Eccentrico exhibition showcases 51 dresses from the Giorgio Armani and Giorgio Armani Privé collections – 51 refined creations, dating from 1985 to the present, that with their evocative beauty conjure up a vision of exquisite elegance, and feature fantastic, imaginative ideas that appear to transform the very essence of things. In addition to these, there are over 200 accessories on show including jewellery, shoes, bags and hats.

Giorgio Armani says, “After Milan, I wanted to bring Eccentrico to Tokyo to celebrate five years of Armani/Ginza Tower, to pay tribute to my love of Japanese culture and aesthetics, which have often inspired me in my work.”

A private preview of the exhibition took place during the event. The Armani/Ginza Tower was specially transformed for the occasion: on the two floors that house Emporio Armani a DJ played a set, and cocktails were served in a casual environment; on the floor that houses Giorgio Armani womenswear there was an exhibition of 28 sketches of dresses that are being shown in Eccentrico.

On the Giorgio Armani menswear floor champagne cocktails were available, in the Armani/Casa area there was a wine tasting and the Armani Ristorante hosted its own cocktail party. The Armani Bar provided a smoking area and served cognac.

Armani/Ginza Tower, located in the heart of the world-renowned Ginza fashion retail area, opened five years ago in November 2007. The distinctive building is one of the district’s most significant architectural landmarks, not only because of its scale – it reaches the area’s maximum allowed height of 56 metres – but also because of its extraordinary exterior and interior design, created by leading Italian architects Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas.

A bamboo motif distinguishes the tower and is used across the façades, and is extended through the use of LED backlighting, accentuating the stylized line of the building’s gilt metal frame. Bamboo “leaves” are covered with a film of milky-white frosted plexiglas, draping the façade in a brilliant mantle of light.

MARNI "L'Arte del Ritratto" at Art Basel and Design Miami 2012

“L’ARTE DEL RITRATTO”
AT ART BASEL AND DESIGN MIAMI 2012

During Art Basel and Design Miami 2012, Marni will present, for the first time in the US, the exhibition “L’Arte del Ritratto” with a new edition of 125 chairs from the Marni Charity Project, which will be sold exclusively at the Marni Miami Store.

Marni has presented for Salone del Mobile 2012 a collection of 100 chairs made in Colombia by ex-prisoners. This Marni venture aims to reinforce the prisoners resettlement into social and working life. A common seat in Colombian local families, re-interpreted by Marni who modified the shape, the woven pattern and created new color variations. The chairs are linked to the “L’Arte del Ritratto” project through a photo exhibition created in collaboration with the photographer and filmmaker Francesco Jodice. His performances are based on works of categorization: the chairs are used as background for a series of portraits of Marni teams from different departments. “L’Arte del Ritratto” is an homage dedicated to them, destined to last in time, which is also accompanied by a video that reports the shooting experience.

The exhibition is now touring to the Marni boutique in Miami for Art Basel and Design Miami. Each style will be positioned throughout the boutique and display a small screen featuring the video from the project “L’Arte del Ritratto” or behind the scenes from the online magazine of Marni.com, Anticamera. The potraits, set in small frames, are placed on the shelves and tables, mingling with the products.

The project reaffirms Marni’s involvement with charitable initiatives. The funds raised from the sale of the chairs will be donated to Service Network for Children of Inmate.

POP! DESIGN. CULTURE. FASHION Exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum

The Fashion and Textile Museum celebrates the impact of music, art and celebrity on 20th-century fashion, from Rock ‘n’ Roll to Punk with the forthcoming exhibition

POP! DESIGN• CULTURE• FASHION
- Exhibition dates 6 July – 27 October 2012

From the poodle skirts and embellished leathers of the rockers, the cool styling of the Mods, the high baroque of Psychedelia and the kitsch glamour of 1970s retro, this exhibition celebrates the time when British popular culture first captivated the world.

In the 1950s a new wave of rock-n-roll and youth culture from America swept the country. The mix of popular images and music with art and fashion would change the way people dressed – blurring the boundaries of commerce, culture and style. Between the optimism of 1955 and the disillusion of Punk, the ‘Pop' generation created a lifestyle, which reached its apogee in 1966 in ‘Swinging London’, and values which constantly challenged those of wider society.

Head of the Fashion and Textile Museum, Celia Joicey says
‘Pop culture is probably the most significant British phenomenon of the second half of the twentieth century. Design was a primary means of expression for the Pop protagonists and we’re delighted to havesuch a wide range of exhibits, from Britain and America, which show the changes in youth clothing, attitudes and aspirations.’

The exhibition POP! DESIGN • CULTURE • FASHIONshowcases the influence of Pop culture on several design mediums from 1955 to 1976, including record covers and packaging by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton, and the work of fashion designers like Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, John Stephen and Betsey Johnson, design director of the leading New York boutique of the era.

Curator of the Fashion and Textile Museum, Dennis Nothdruft says....
‘Exhibition highlightswill include purple flares worn by Donovan, the pop-art fashions of Mary Quant as well as Quant’s early modernist pieces from the original Bazaar, items from Elton John’s personal wardrobe, and original pieces from Westwood and McLaren’s Sex. The exhibition will provide new insight into twenty years of popular culture from one of the most comprehensive private collections of design and fashion.'

Pop graphics will be explored, from the British psychedelic artwork of Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, and the posters of the American West Coast rock venues in San Francisco, to the work of Martin Sharp for underground magazine OZ. The influence of Heinz Eidelmann’s design for the Beatles film Yellow Submarine on late 1960s design will be touched on, as well as the work of ‘Mr Freedom’ fashion designers Pamla Motown and Jim O’Connor, and the early 1970s work of fashion and textile designer Miss Mouse, aka Rae Spence-Cullen.

Throughout, furniture, original posters, graphics and promotional materials will help to set the scene while an “I’m Backing Britain” display will create a dramatic centrepiece. The exhibition will also highlight the casual throwaway nature of much Pop design, from the paper furniture and Union Jack clothing of ‘Swinging London’ to the late 1960s American vogue for paper dresses, to the tin badges, machine-embroidered patches and printed t-shirts of the early 1970s.

POP! DESIGN • CULTURE • FASHION will also present the work of ‘Them’, an influential group of Baroque Pop designers who coalesced around Zandra Rhodes in the 1970s, and will end with the anti-design of Punk fashion by Vivienne Westwood and the graphics of Jamie Reid.

GOOD READ: LOUIS VUITTON & MARC JACOBS..... THE BOOK

By Pamela Golbin - Rizzoli International

This fascinating publication presents the roles two men have played in turning a small workshop in nineteenth-century Paris into one of the most successful and recognized brands in the world. Known for both craftsmanship and must-have high design, Louis Vuitton the luxury house was started by its eponymous founder in 1854. The first half of this publication traces the innovations by Vuitton, who turned the little-known guild profession of emballeur (packer) into the foremost luxury trunk maker in Paris, with a clientele that included in his lifetime the French nobility as well as the elite of a prosperous empire. Prime and never-before-seen examples of Vuitton’s craftsmanship, along with the fashion that went into them, are the highlights of these chapters. The second half of the book examines the role of Marc Jacobs as Louis Vuitton’s creative director (since 1997), who took the Louis Vuitton house into a new era with a series of collaborations with artists and designers—such as Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Stephen Sprouse—as well as designing a line of highly successful and desired clothing for the company.By examining two divergent but often similar careers one hundred years apart, Louis Vuitton / Marc Jacobs is not only a layered study of the evolution of a luxury brand in the past 150 years but also a celebration of technical and design innovations in the new century.
