Liverpool is the 'magpie shopping' capital.

Liverpool is ‘magpie shopping’ capital

A study of shoppers across major English cities, carried out by St John’s Shopping Centre, found that both male and female Scousers are the most style and bargain conscious in the country.

The average Scouser visits 3.5 stores in preparation for a night out; compared to those in Leicester where the average is 2.7, or Southampton shoppers who visit just 2.1.

The survey also revealed that Liverpudlians are the most likely to say that they follow designer styles in glossy magazines and then recreate the look at a fraction of the cost. 33% of Liverpool shoppers agreed with this sentiment, compared with just four per cent in York, nine per cent in Sheffield, and only 21% in fashion-savvy London.

Liverpool lads and ladies also topped the tables when asked if they would avoid wearing a full outfit of clothes from one store. 50% of Liverpool shoppers said that  mixing their labels and avoiding a ‘matchy’ look  was important to them, compared with just 16% in Leeds and 13% in York.

Ian Ward, centre director at St Johns Shopping Centre in Liverpool, said: “We’re certainly aware of the ‘magpie shopper’ phenomenon. They are easy to spot, weighed down by lots of different store bags and with a penchant for small, shiny bargains to pull an outfit together.

“It’s no surprise to us that Liverpool is the country’s magpie shopping capital. We are proud of our fashion credentials in this city and work hard to keep up; that often means shopping around to ensure we can always afford to have the latest look.

“St Johns is home to several independent retailers who have their fingers on the pulse of the fashion industry, and work hard to offer the latest looks without forcing shoppers to break the bank.”
