OMEGA explores space with Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Eugene Cernan and TomStafford

OMEGA House provided an out-of-this-world experience where guests had the opportunity to hear Buzz Aldrin recount his adventure to the moon, and later enjoy the evening with Eugene Cernan and Tom Strafford.

Guests at the OMEGA House were starry-eyed on Wednesday afternoon as they had the opportunity to hear space explorer Buzz Aldrin share his experiences seeing our planet Earth from an incredibly different point of view. The “Explore Space” event took place at the OMEGA House – the brand’s luxurious social activity hub throughout the games.

Rocket scientist Buzz Aldrin was the pilot of the first manned lunar landing and second man to walk on the surface of the moon. He has been an OMEGA brand ambassador since 2009. “Timing has always been a key element in my life. I have been blessed to have been in the right place at the right time”, said Buzz Aldrin.

OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart was proud to introduce Buzz Aldrin: “When people hear Buzz speak, they are experiencing a direct link with what was arguably mankind’s most remarkable technological achievement. Buzz’s inspiring talk was a fascinating reminder of why OMEGA is so thrilled to have had such a long and close relationship with NASA and its amazing missions”.

The space visionary and brand ambassador described his story leading up to his voyage to space, his experience as the second man on the moon and his visions for the future of space exploration. “The true value of Apollo is the amazing story of innovation and teamwork that went into overcoming all the obstacles to reach the moon”, he said. “Apollo is the story of people at their best, working together for a common goal. We started with a dream, and we can do these kinds of things again”.

Later in the evening, brand ambassadors Eugene Cernan and Tom Stafford joined Buzz Aldrin and OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart in the Secret Garden.

The OMEGA House was filled with guests enjoying the “molecular gastronomic” creations by chef Alejandro Diaz and mixologist Helen Kublick, while the upbeat music added to the cosmic atmosphere in the impressive Secret Garden and Speedmaster Bar.

Eugene Cernan has been a brand ambassador since 2000, and is known for making his mark in history for traveling to the moon not once but twice. He is distinguished as the last man to leave his footprint on the lunar surface. Thirteen of his 20 years as a Naval Aviator were spent with NASA.

Tom Stafford, commander of the first flight to circle the moon and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, joined Eugene Cernan at the OMEGA House and shared the evening with OMEGA-, Olympic- and space-enthusiasts alike.

OMEGA is known for its adventurous and pioneering spirit. The brand has participated actively in some of the most challenging, fascinating adventures in human history such as the conquest of space, including all six lunar landings. On 1st March 1965, OMEGA’s Speedmaster chronograph was “flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions”. It was the moment Dr. Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the surface of the moon with a Speedmaster on his wrist that the timepiece was coined with its distinctive nickname: The Moonwatch.
