A barren wasteland comes to life, spring/summer 2016 embodies the contrasts found in the fertile deserts of Mexico. The idea of endless arid landscapes interrupted by lush nature inspires an image of playful versus moody femininity, reflected in a colour palette of hard blacks against taupes, light pinks, and motifs of cacti with flowers.
Clean A-line shapes play canvas to the flora and fauna of dry climates, with cacti woven graphically in sheer fil coupé and similarly transformed into a print version. Rich florals appear throughout the collection, in placement prints featuring graphic flowers on stripes, embroidered on a sheer organza bomber and skirt, and in a rustling 3D sequin embellishment resembling a blooming desert, echoed in shoes.
Fusing the light and dark themes of the collection, a motif sees a Mexican luchador in a traditional wrestling mask holding a flower. Evoking the humorous characteristic of Markus Lupfer’s work, the design is used in patch garments, printed on crêpe, and embroidered on t-shirts, emphasising – alongside other handwork – the collection’s focus on intricate craftsmanship and luxe fabrication.
