Wonder Woman - Jessica Ennis

Wonder woman

It was a golden day in the Omega House yesterday, as guests gathered to witness the most exciting day’s Olympic action yet when Omega ambassador Jessica Ennis crowned a glut of medals for Team GB with victory in the heptathlon.

The roar from the Olympic Stadium as Ennis took her place on the starting line must have been audible for miles as the crowd got to their feet to cheer her on. After an incredibly successful two days of competition, including a series of personal bests and a world record, the 26-year-old from Sheffield went into the final 800m run almost certain of victory.

As the poster girl for London 2012 she must still have felt the weight of expectation on her shoulders, but she handled the pressure perfectly and delivered gold with a cool nerve and a broad smile to grab glory. She crossed the line in 2 minutes, 8.65 seconds, resulting in a final points total of 6,955 – an enormous 306 points ahead of second place Lilli Schwarzkopf, from Germany.

Clearly overcome with emotion and smiling with joy and disbelief, Ennis grabbed a Union Flag to wave at the adoring crowd and thank her fellow competitors. A true sportswoman of the highest calibre, both in performance and behaviour – Jessica Ennis has taken her place in sporting history.

Her effort crowned a glorious day for Team GB, which began with double gold in the rowing at Eton Dorney. Later in the afternoon guests were caught up in the atmosphere as the women’s team pursuit girls were cheered on to victory by Paul McCartney and an enthusiastic crowd in the Velodrome. The upward trajectory continued with gold for Greg Rutherford in the long jump and Mo Farah in the 10,000m.

The results consolidate Britain’s position of third in the medal table and set up a fantastic second week of sporting action at Omega House that promises visits by two of the big stories of London 2012: Jessica Ennis and Michael Phelps, who bowed out of the Olympics with an astonishing eighteenth gold medal in the 4x100m Medley Relay.
