COPYCAT DADS! - 46% of Dad's admit to copying their son's style

COPYCAT DADS!

LIKE SON, LIKE FATHER WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION

-          46% of Dad’s admit to copying their son’s style in order to avoid being an out of date Dad

-          64% of Dad’s ask son for advice when buying clothes

Fear of being an embarrassing Dad has seen a new trend of copycat Dads with many admitting to copying their son’s styling or turning to them for fashion inspiration when buying clothes.

According to a study for fashion retailer Jacamo, 56% of Dad’s admit to copying their son’s style in order to avoid being an out of date Dad. Almost two thirds of Dads (64%) also said they sought their son’s advice when it came to buying a new outfit.

The trend has been illustrated by celebrity dads who copy their sons’ style, such as actor Jude

Law and his 18 year old son Rafferty, David Beckham and youngster Brooklyn and rocker Jon Bon Jovi and his eldest, Jesse Bongiovi.

The top five items that Dad’s admitted to copying were:

·         A new pair of trainers

·         Rolling jeans up at the bottom

·         Wearing an open shirt with T shirt underneath

·         Adding a hat to their outfit

·         Rolling shirt sleeves up

Commissioned by Jacamo to mark Father’s Day, the report also found the once standard gifts of socks and ties have fallen out of favor. Now, trendy shirts, stand out sweaters and brightly coloured casual tops, and grooming products, are more popular.

Shirts are top of the gift list, with sweaters second and casual tops third. Although ties do still make it into the top ten – just at number nine.

Martin Roberts, spokesperson for Jacamo said: “In the past sons might have looked to their fathers when trying to dress to impress, now it’s the other way round. Teenagers have a style these days that’s both street wise and edgy, and dads don’t want to miss out.

“It’s not about carbon – copy mini me’s, but it’s about finding an age appropriate style that suits your shape and personality. Increasingly we are finding that fathers will ask their sons about looking youthful and stylish.”

The survey found four out of ten dads under 45 owned a baseball cap, 75% owned sneaker or trainer-style footwear, almost  45% a pair of cropped trousers and 6% also owned at least one other style of hat. Cufflinks were less common – only 23% said they owned more than two pairs.

For fathers over 45, baseball hats were less popular, at 11%, but the number who owned other styles of hats was much higher at 34%.  Just 9% owned a pair of cropped trousers. However they wiped the floor with their younger counter-parts when it came to cufflinks with almost treble the number (67%) saying they owned more than two pairs.
