T.M LEWIN X BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP

T.M.Lewin is proud to announce a new partnership with British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops. With the launch of a new in store recycling programme, the British shirt maker is helping to raise essential funds for life-saving research.

Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, responsible for almost 74,000 deaths in the UK each year – that’s an average of 200 people every day.  Founded in 1961, the BHF is the UK’s number one heart charity, helping to fund invaluable research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory disease.

Since 6th December 2013, T.M.Lewin has been running a dedicated recycling scheme across 80 of its stores nationwide. These stores now recycle any garments which cannot be sold, providing BHF shops with regular donations of high quality shirts and tailoring. The scheme has also had a positive environmental impact, reducing T.M.Lewin's waste output significantly.

The partnership value, originally estimated at £112,000 for the year, now looks set to reach over £220,000, with over 5,995 items already donated to date.

  • £200,000 could fund the complete costs of a research project for three years, including salaries for research staff, funds for the equipment and laboratory materials needed for the project
  • £200,000 could fund two PhD students’ stipends and experimental costs for three years
  • £218,162 could fund all of the work two junior scientists do in a year, including disposable equipment such as glassware, plastic, gloves, chemicals and cell cultures, staff costs, and other essential scientific instruments
  • £220,000 could fund 1,232 days (three years) of specialist Heart Failure nursing, changing the lives of around 7,480 heart failure sufferers
  • £220,000 could help to provide 7,333 chest pain kits to support community trainers talking to people about the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and what to do if they need help
  • £220,000 could provide 2,200 primary schools with heart health resources
  • £220,000 could help to fund a Heart Helpline cardiac nurse for 314 weeks (six years). Cardiac nurses help heart patients, carers and families to better understand and live with their conditions

Staff at T.M.Lewin have also been supporting the scheme by donating their own unwanted items and taking part in fundraising events, including this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon and the London to Brighton Bike Ride.

Geoff Quinn, T.M.Lewin CEO, says: ‘As an organisation, we’re very proud to be joining the BHF in its fight for every heartbeat. The team have really got behind this initiative and it will be great to see the results of all their enthusiasm and commitment.’

Karen O’Donoghue, National Stock Generation Manager at the BHF, says:‘We’re very grateful to T.M.Lewin for its fantastic support of BHF shops in this innovative way. We’re looking forward to working with the team over the next year and beyond to be able to raise as much money as possible for our vital research into heart disease, as well as being able to offer our customers some great quality clothing at a fantastic price.’
