For SS16, Faustine Steinmetz has developed the brands values further; challenging every day pieces that have no discernible value and creating new interesting garments. This season Faustine is not only working with denim, but also reimagining tracksuits, polo shirts, dresses and also creating a vegan handbag range. For SS16, Faustine drew inspiration from two artists; Joseph Kosuth and Salvador Dali. Despite being from different time periods, Dali and Kosuth share similar conceptual and aesthetic values. Faustine has focused on the transformative elements present in Dali’s work; he repeatedly depicted ordinary objects in his paintings in a distorted manner. This process of altering the ordinary is apparent in staple pieces from the label such as polo top, tracksuits and jeans; they are stretched, pulled, melted and knotted- sometimes to abstraction. Similarly, Kosuth’s work provokes the conceptual elements of Faustine’s collection, she challenges the viewer to question the standards of specific pieces and re-imagine the pieces beyond their classic form. This season also sees Faustine using real denim which she has developed with a Spanish denim mill; Royo. Working together, the duo have been able to create new pleated and shredded denim by recycling old jeans in a sustainable way- something at the core of the British label. This season cotton has again been Faustine’s favoured material for which the brand would like to thank Cotton USA.
