TOP SCOTTISH DESIGNERS TEAM UP FOR CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT CLOTHING WASTE
TOP SCOTTISH DESIGNERS TEAM UP FOR CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT CLOTHING WASTE
Leading Scottish fashion designers have come together to support ‘Love Your Clothes’, by creating designs for less than £10
Designers including Jennifer Morris, Deetz, William Chambers and Alan Moore offered their design skills to be part of an exciting campaign which encourages the upcycling and recycling of unwanted clothes to cut the massive clothing wastage in
The Scottish designers each liberated a piece of clothing or accessory to give it a new lease of life showing that, with some straight forward adjustments, that old little black dress or the discarded suit lying at the back of the wardrobe can be transformed into an updated, on-trend garment. Each of the designers added simple updates which can be easily followed to create a DIY high-end look all for under £10.
William Chambers said: "I got involved in this project as hats are excellent accessories to update and upcycle, meaning you can wear the same hat with different trims to various special occasions. If you buy well and invest in a good quality timeless hat shape it can be easily modernised with new trims so that it can get worn again and again."
The upcycled items updated by the designers were used in a fashion-forward photoshoot, all styled with second-hand accessories from Glad Rags thrift shop in Glasgow, proving no one needs to spend a fortune to update their wardrobe. Glad Rags are a not for profit organisation and can provide that pre-loved could-be-new pair of shoes or the vintage-look statement clutch to give your existing garments a fresh, fashionable look at a fraction of the price all the while helping the environment. If you’re not a dab hand with a needle and thread, updating your look with key second hand items is a perfect solution to ‘Love Your Clothes’ without contributing to the shocking amount of clothing wastage.
This weekend sees ‘Love Your Clothes’ invite consumers to be part of a campaign named ‘Spring Clean Your Wardrobe Weekend’. Running from Saturday 31st May – Sunday 1st June, people around Scotland will clear out their wardrobes and choose items to recycle or, follow in the Scottish designers’ footsteps and upcycle their garments to give their closets a much-need update just in time for summer. DEBENHAMS MENSWEAR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD TO LAUNCH AT GRADUATE FASHION WEEK
This year sees the exciting launch of the Debenhams Menswear Scholarshipat Graduate Fashion Week, which will see one graduate awarded a 12 month paid contract within the Debenhams menswear design department. Set to become an annual award, this is being added to 11 other prizes which will be decided when the event begins this weekend in London.
Showcasing the work of over 1,000 graduates from the most influential and inspiring UK and international universities, Graduate Fashion Week represents the future of creative design talent. Attracting over 20,000 guests each year, the event features exhibitions from over 40 universities. With many graduates populating design studios, buying offices, publishing houses and creative agencies all over the world, Graduate Fashion Week has introduced some of the industry’s brightest stars.
On the judging panel this year is Julian Fuller, Head Of Menswear Design at Debenhams, who will be mentoring and working alongside the winner, “This is one of the most important dates in the UK fashion calendar which always showcases the most exciting and imaginative new design talents out there. I’m so proud to be a part of the launch of the Debenhams Menswear Scholarship, which will allow us to nurture one of these rising stars and give them invaluable skills for the future.” Debenhams have a history of aligning with influential designers, with the most recent being the Savile Row tailor Patrick Grant, a past judge of the event himself who launched his incredibly successful Hammond & Co. range for the High Street retailer last year.
An unrivalled platform for the promotion of new talent, Graduate Fashion Week bridges the gap between graduation and employment and is responsible for launching the careers of some of the most successful designers of our time including Christopher Bailey, who was the winner of the first ever Graduate Fashion Week Gold Award, Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson and Julien Macdonald.
Graduate Fashion Week begins on Saturday 31st May and runs until Tuesday 3rd June when the winners will be announced.
