Swarovski Entertainment Ltd announces the release of its first feature film,Romeo & Juliet, in United KingdomCanada and United States theatres on 11th October 2013,following the worldwide premiere in Los Angeles last week.

Adapted for the screen from Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy by Julian Fellowes and directed by Carlo Carlei, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth as the tragic lovers.

Co-produced with Ileen Maisel of Amber Entertainment and Echo Lake Entertainment, Romeo & Juliet is the first screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic love story in 16 years, and the first traditionally told in a renaissance setting for 44 years. An entrancing and powerful story about forbidden love, desire and passion, it perfectly embodies the spirit and legacy of the Swarovski brand.

Nadja Swarovski, Chairperson of Swarovski Entertainment Ltd and one of the film’s producers, commented: “Swarovski has worked with talents in costume and set design ever since the emergence of the silver screen, and we are committed to supporting creativity across industries such as fashion, jewellery, design and film. Romeo & Juliet felt like the perfect project to deepen that involvement and collaborate with established visionaries like Ileen and Julian whilst also supporting today’s emerging talent. The young stars have a chemistry that translates beautifully onto the big screen and will captivate audiences around the world for years to come.”

Swarovski also worked closely with the film’s visual consultant Milena Canonero and costume designerCarlo Poggioli to adorn the early Renaissance costumes, jewellery, accessories and masks with half a million crystals to evoke the lights and colours of the period.

Award-winning director Carlo Carlei directs from a script by Academy Award and Golden Globe-winnerJulian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Gosford Park), who adapted Shakespeare’s classic love story for a new generation.

Lord Fellowes commented: “Every generation is interested in love. But there is something about young love that is heartbreaking, and I think every teenager in the world would agree. All of that is very powerful. The point about teenage love is it’s before cynicism comes in to reshape one’s attitudes. You love when you’re young in a way that you’ll probably never love again.”

With a history spanning 80 years on the silver screen, and having worked hand-in-hand with countless costume, jewellery and set designers on some of Hollywood’s most iconic productions, it is a natural evolution for Swarovski to move into film production. Swarovski Entertainment aims to express Swarovski’s philosophy, ideas and values through moving images to enchant and inspire audiences around the world.
