The House of Vans Berlin showcased a collection of vintage Vans footwear, apparel and associated ephemera representing the brands 47year history.
Working with Europe's preeminent collectors including Berlin's Skateboard Museum, Parisian photographer Dimitri Coste and London vintage supremeos The Other Side of the Pillow, For the first time vans exhibited a display of over 200 pair of original shoes dating back to 1966 Demonstrating Vans unique heritage and commitment to authenticity thorough curated showcases and an illustrated timeline.
Highlights included a pair of recently discovered shoes thought to date back to the first few months of production at the original Vans factory in Orange County, classic 80's canvas prints and a few oddities including Clown Shoes in Vans iconic checkerboard.
Jürgen Blümlein - Founder / Curator SKATEBOARD MUSEUM
Skateboarding's premier archivist Jürgen Blümlein can trace his long held obsession with skate footwear back to the early 80's when he went to extreme lengths to obtain a custom pair of Vans Style 38 (now known as the “sk8-Hi”). 30 years later Jürgen has published a book on skate shoes and is founder and curator of Berlin's skateboard museum. Jürgen explains that the highlight of his Vans collection is a pair of custom style 36s (now called the “old skool”) donated by a close friend who had the shoes manufactured with a unique patchwork of different materials.
Henry Davies - The Other Side of the Pillow
Henry travels the world uncovering long forgotten hauls of Made in the USA dead stock Vans to sell in his East London store. Boasting one of if the strongest personal collection of vans footwear and apparel Henry has made it his life's work to discover the un-told history of the brands earliest days. Henry's recently unveiled a pair Vans thought to be from the company`s earliest days which are on display for the first time publicly at the House of Vans.
Dimitri Coste Long time Vans collaborator, French artist, photographer and filmmaker Dimitri Coste is as passionate about his craft as he is about his subjects. His body of work is an extension of himself, focusing on his admiration of motorcyles, music and fashion specifically 80´s BMX culture and classic Vans styles. Coste owns one of the most comprehensive collections of Vans shoes and memorabilia in the world, including numerous renditions of the classic iconic vans Era originally known as the Style 95.
Three showcases featuring the unique collections from the above will be exhibited in Berlin for the duration of the House of Vans at Stadtbad Oderberger Straße, the “People’s Bathhouse of Berlin.”
